Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has given members of parliament some time to work out proposals intended to help end the ongoing political crisis. "I give you this time," Yuschenko said during consultations on the early dissolution of the country's parliament on Wednesday. "It is important that an initiative should be formulated after today's consultations obviously by leaders of parliamentary factions that will help solve issues in parliament in order to end this stalemate. You may run forward or backward, but you have to provide suggestions as to how to break this deadlock," the president said.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko claimed on Tuesday that the Regions Party was in a conspiracy with the presidential secretariat to break up the democratic coalition. "I want to state clearly, that there are no talks [between] the BYT and the Regions Party, as the Regions Party was in a conspiracy with the presidential secretariat to break up the democratic coalition and call early elections," Tymoshenko said at a press conference in Kyiv. "Dear MPs, there is chance for understanding. I rely on your [sense of] responsibility for the future of Ukraine," he said.
Gas memorandum agreed by Russia, Ukraine to serve as basis for Gazprom-Naftogaz deal – Putin
2 October 2008, 19:51
Novo-Ogaryovo, October 2 (Interfax) - Russian and Ukrainian Prime Ministers Vladimir Putin and Yulia Tymoshenko agreed to an intergovernmental memorandum on cooperation in the gas sphere during their face-to-face meeting on Thursday. "After a very substantial talk, we managed to coordinate an intergovernmental memorandum on cooperation in gas issues, which could later serve as a basis for a future gas treaty between Gazprom and Naftogaz Ukrainy," Putin said, opening broader Russian-Ukrainian talks on Thursday. He stressed that the future agreement must take into account "every detail". Tymoshenko, for her part, said that "many countries, European ones included, expect regular gas supplies and regular transit [via Ukraine]," hence the importance of the deal. She said she and Putin had discussed "how the sides will work on transit and how they will jointly handle gas surpluses accumulated in underground storage terminals".
Tymoshenko hopes fall in international prices of oil will cut price of Russian gas for Ukraine
2 October 2008, 15:39
Ukrainian Premier Yulia Tymoshenko has said she hopes that the fall in the price of oil will positively impact the price of Russian gas for Ukraine. "Prices of oil fell, and we expect that the prices of fuel will fall, and the price of gas is linked with the price of oil, and tomorrow [on October 2] at talks in Moscow there is every chance to fight for a realistic price for Ukraine," she said on the Fifth Channel on Wednesday night. Tymoshenko said that taking into account the fall in the prices of oil, there are all the grounds to say that the price of gas will be moderate. She also said that during talks with Russian Premier Vladimir Putin they discussed giving Ukraine time to transfer to European-level prices of gas. Tymoshenko said that the talks would be for the first time in history held on equal terms.

The directives approved by the Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday regarding gas talks with Russia rule out any intermediaries, Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko said. "According to these directives, as of January 1, 2009, our relations will not involve any intermediaries or any shadowy and corrupt schemes, our contracts will be direct," she told a press conference after the session. The directives also involve Russia's guarantees regarding Ukraine's gas balance and Ukraine's guarantees to transit Russian gas in quantities that Russia committed to supply under export contracts. The approved directives also set out Ukraine's position with regard to gas provided by Russia for further transportation to Europe, Tymoshenko added. "We would like to make sure that Russia gives us this gas for pumping and that we have a guaranteed supply of quantities of this gas," she said.

Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, the leader of the bloc, has urged MPs of the faction of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc to join the extended democratic coalition with the Bloc of Lytvyn.
