Government, parliament securing economic growth in Ukraine, says premier
5 September 2008, 15:07
Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has assured U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney that the government, together with the parliament, is securing economic growth in the country. "The Ukrainian democratic government and the democratic parliament today have managed to secure high indicators of economic growth, at the level of 6.5%, although we inherited very high inflation," she said at a meeting with the U.S. vice president. Tymoshenko told Cheney that she warmly recalled her meeting with U.S. President George W. Bush, who said that Ukraine is an open state, which has excellent prospects. The Ukrainian premier and U.S. vice president are discussing issues of regional security, the provision of stability in the region and the diversification of energy supplies, Tymoshenko's press secretary Maryna Soroka said.
Crisis in coalition not to have bad impact on domestic and foreign policies of Ukraine, says Yuschenko
4 September 2008, 15:52
The parliamentary crisis will not have a bad impact on the basic strategies of domestic and foreign policy in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has said. "I want to stress that our main strategies for domestic and foreign policy will not suffer from [the coalition's breakdown]," he said at a meeting with the G7 ambassadors' summit in Kyiv on Thursday. Yuschenko said he was confident that whatever decision is taken on a new coalition or a new government, Ukraine will find especially democratic ways to settle that situation. The president said he had supported the decision of the OUPSD faction to withdraw from the coalition due to the serious infringements of the coalition agreements by the faction's partners, the BYT.
Ukrainian president may dissolve parliament, call new election
3 September 2008, 16:13
Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko sees the recent events in the parliament as the beginning of creation of a new coalition. If the coalition fails to be formed within the period established by the law, he will dissolve the Verkhovna Rada and call a new parliamentary election, Yuschenko said in a statement on Wednesday. "From the legal standpoint, I see the events in the parliament as a formal start of creation of a new parliamentary coalition. If a coalition of deputy factions is not formed within the period previewed by the Ukrainian Constitution, I shall use my right to dissolve the Verkhovna Rada and call early election," he said. "I shall operate under the state legislation whatever the surprises," he said. The 6th Verkhovna Rada was elected by early election less than a year ago after the early dismissal of the 5th Verkhovna Rada elected in spring 2006.

President hopes government will propose realistic reforms for coal industry in 2009
29 August 2008, 17:15
Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has said he expects the government to start conducting realistic reform of the coal industry in 2009. The head of state said in an interview with journalists in Krasnoarmiysk, Donetsk region on Friday that the Coal Ministry, executive authorities and coal directorates had so far paid little attention to reforming the coal sector. "The Ukrainian government and the Coal Ministry must do everything to improve today what we have been speaking about for years. This is what is currently necessary for miners, the coal industry and the state," Yuschenko said, adding that he will do his best to finish the next year effectively. According to the president, private investors should play a key role in reform of Ukraine's coal industry. Yuschenko also called for facilitating the procedure for licensing the production of coal by small and medium companies.

Arseniy Yatseniuk, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has forecast that a new political season in the Ukrainian parliament will be very hot. He was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday while visiting the flood-hit western regions of Ukraine. "This autumn will be very hot in political terms", Yatseniuk said, commenting on the Regions Party's intention to set up an ad-hoc commission in the Verkhovna Rada to work on draft laws to amend the Constitution of Ukraine. "We must clearly understand that a new season of preparations for new presidential elections has actually started," Yatseniuk said. He added that in such conditions "it has been very difficult to hold the Ukrainian parliament together as there were several attempts to dissolve it."
Accusations of treason against Tymoshenko evidence of political confrontation, Yanukovych says
22 August 2008, 15:57

He was commenting on the accusations of state treason leveled against Tymoshenko by the presidential secretariat and the subsequent forwarding of respective files to the Security Service of Ukraine. "I have no information on this issue. If I had it I would offer my assessment," Yanukovych said. "Certainly there is political struggle, political confrontation where every means are used. Society does not have questions about this, as the situation is clear to everyone," he said. Yanukovych said concrete facts should be provided in such cases.
