New season in parliament will be complicated, Yatseniuk forecasts

Arseniy Yatseniuk, the chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, has forecast that a new political season in the Ukrainian parliament will be very hot. He was speaking at a press conference on Tuesday while visiting the flood-hit western regions of Ukraine. "This autumn will be very hot in political terms", Yatseniuk said, commenting on the Regions Party's intention to set up an ad-hoc commission in the Verkhovna Rada to work on draft laws to amend the Constitution of Ukraine. "We must clearly understand that a new season of preparations for new presidential elections has actually started," Yatseniuk said. He added that in such conditions "it has been very difficult to hold the Ukrainian parliament together as there were several attempts to dissolve it."
Accusations of treason against Tymoshenko evidence of political confrontation, Yanukovych says

The accusations of treason against Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko have been evidence of serious political confrontation, Regions Party Leader Viktor Yanukovych said at a briefing in Kyiv on Friday. He was commenting on the accusations of state treason leveled against Tymoshenko by the presidential secretariat and the subsequent forwarding of respective files to the Security Service of Ukraine. "I have no information on this issue. If I had it I would offer my assessment," Yanukovych said. "Certainly there is political struggle, political confrontation where every means are used. Society does not have questions about this, as the situation is clear to everyone," he said. Yanukovych said concrete facts should be provided in such cases.
Security Service receives documents on illegal government activities from presidential secretariat

The Security Service of Ukraine has received documents from the presidential secretariat on the activities of the Cabinet of Ministers that are harmful to national interests, the press service of the Security Service of Ukraine said on Thursday. The information will be thoroughly checked in line with the law on the Security Service of Ukraine. The Security Service of Ukraine has turned to the Cabinet of Ministers, the Foreign Intelligence Service, and law-enforcement agencies for respective information. If unlawful acts jeopardizing Ukraine's public or economic security are exposed, respective materials will be referred to the Prosecutor General's Office. The press service didn't disclose the content of the files. As reported earlier, deputy head of presidential secretariat Andriy Kyslynky said that the Russian political leadership was seriously considering support for Tymoshenko's nomination for president in exchange for her and her political force's passive position on the conflict in Georgia.
Yuschenko demands enhanced security during military parade in Kyiv

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has ordered the Defense Ministry of Ukraine and Kyiv City State Administration to provide for enhanced security measures to ensure people's safety during the Independence Day military parade and the preparations for it. This concerns the planned flight of 30 aircraft over Kyiv in particular. This is stated in the president's decree dated August 20 on the provision of citizens' safety during the holding of the military parade on the occasion of the 17th anniversary of Ukraine's independence. By the decree, Yuschenko banned the demonstration of operational capabilities of aircraft during the preparations and holding of the parade in Kyiv. Ukraine will celebrate the 17th anniversary of its independence on 24 August.
Tymoshenko's government drafting new gas agreement with Russia, Radio Liberty reports

Yulia Tymoshenko's government is working on a new strategic agreement that should include transparent provisions for the formation of price for Russian natural gas supplies and its pumping through Ukraine, the premier's adviser for energy issues Oleksandr Hudyma has said. He said that the agreement put forward by the Cabinet of Ministers would not contain any secret clauses or protocols, unlike those concluded by Viktor Yanukovych's government, Radio Liberty reported on Tuesday. At the same time, the former head of the National JSC Naftogaz Ukrainy, deputy head of the parliamentary committee for fuel and energy complex, MP Yuriy Boiko of the Party of Regions, has dismissed the accusations of non-transparency regarding the gas agreement concluded by Viktor Yanukovych's government. He insisted that the current government should continue the changes in gas agreements initiated by their predecessors.
Yuschenko slams government for lack of financing plan for restoration of flood-hit facilities

Speaking to journalists in Halych, Ivano-Frankivsk region, President Victor Yuschenko criticized the government for protracting the adoption of a plan of financing the reconstruction of facilities in the flood-hit region. "It's a shame that the plan of financing of every facility hasn't been passed by the government yet. This is not a proper way to tackle the natural disaster aftermath, I believe," he said at a meeting with residents of the city of Halych, Ivano-Frankivsk region. According to the president, out of UAH 350 million reserved for the restoration of Ivano-Frankivsk region, only UAH 50 million were actually provided from the budget. Besides, the president criticized the State Service of Automobile Roads of Ukraine (Ukravtodor) activities. In particular, only 15% of motor-road bridges and about 20% of pedestrian bridges have been restores in the Ivano-Frankivsk region.

Ukraine's Viktor Ruban has won Archery Men's Individual event at the Beijing Olympics. The Ukrainian archer shot 113 out of a possible 120 points outshooting by one point Park Yung-mo from the Republic of Korea, who took silver. The bronze medal went to Russia's Bair Badenov.
Ukraine women's fencing team wins Olympic gold in Beijing

Ukraine has won its first gold medal in the Women's Team. Sabre event at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Ukrainian sabre team, Olha Kharlan, Olena Khmorova, alyna Pundyk, and reserve Olha Zhovnir, defeated China's team 45-44 on August 14. The bronze went to the United States. Ukraine has already won four bronze medals at the Beijing Olympics.
Yuschenko says scheme for peaceful settlement of South Ossetian conflict to be passed soon

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has said that a scheme for the peaceful settlement of the South Ossetian conflict is to be passed soon. He was speaking with Ukrainian and foreign journalists in Tbilisi in the early hours on Wednesday, following a rally held in support of the unity of Georgia, the presidential press service reported. "The main thing we can currently talk about is the start of the stabilization of the situation," Yuschenko said. According to the Ukrainian president, there are signals of progress in this issue and there are hopes for a successful settlement of the conflict. Yuschenko also commented on a meeting with the leaders of democratic countries scheduled for Wednesday. "Our goal is to form the basis for proper negotiations and take into account all of the peculiarities and all of the positions of the parties that are necessary for the peaceful settlement [of the conflict]," he said, adding that the question of territorial integrity remains a priority for Georgia.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has drafted and put forward his scheme for the settlement of the Georgian-Ossetian conflict, Deputy Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Yeliseyev has said. "We are continuing the policy we adopted from the very beginning [of the conflict]. We are continuing to bolster the consolidation of the international community for the sake of ending the bloodshed and drafting an optimal scheme for the settlement [of the conflict]. We are actually working on this scheme that was drafted and proposed by the Ukrainian president," he said at a briefing in Kyiv on Tuesday. Yeliseyev said that the scheme, apart from requiring a ceasefire, includes the entry of an OSCE peacekeeping mission in the conflict zone and the involvement of the Russian side in this mission. "This [scheme] also includes processes of the region's economic and humanitarian enhancement," he said.
