Most Ukrainians believe Ukraine is going wrong way, according to poll

Kyiv, October 9 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The number of Ukrainians that think the country is on the wrong track is growing, according to a survey conducted by the Socis Center for Social and Political Studies held on September 14-30. "Nearly a month or two ago, the situation was not assessed so negatively, and about 60% of the people had such an opinion. Now 81.4% have this opinion," Socis director Mykola Churylov said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday. A total of 49% of respondents said that stability is what Ukraine needs most of all. Sixty-five percent of respondents were against the early parliamentary elections and only 13% were in favor of them. At the same time, 23.1% believed that early presidential elections would resolve the current political crisis while 15% thought the crisis could not be settled without "making changes to the Constitution, weakening the role of the president, increasing the role of parliament, and making the premier the most powerful person in the state.
UCA proposes Ukrainian leadership take measures to bring construction industry out of crisis

Kyiv, October 2 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Board of Directors of the Ukrainian Construction Association has proposed that the country's leadership take a number of measures to bring the construction industry out of crisis. A corresponding address was sent to the Ukrainian president and premier, Lev Partskhaladze, the head of the XXI Century developing company's board, said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday. In its address, the UCA suggests consolidating the efforts of all construction companies and their associations on the changing of the monetary and forex rate by the National Bank of Ukraine, which would be aimed at propping up the system of mortgage loans for construction. In particular, the UCA proposes to enhance the requirements for the coverage of risks on housing construction loans by property rights from 50% to 70% of their value, as is stipulated for mortgage loans extended to the secondary market.
Former partners in democratic coalition losing trust of voters, according to poll of FOM-Ukraine

Kyiv, September 30 (Interfax-Ukraine) Ц The blocs of parties that were partners in the democratic coalition are losing the confidence of electors following the collapse of the coalition, according to a poll conducted by the FOM-Ukraine Company September 12 through September 26. Oleksandr Bukhalov, the director general of FOM-Ukraine, who presented the results of the poll at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Tuesday, said the rating of the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko fell from 29.2% in January to 18.8% in September, while the rating of the Our Ukraine-People's Self-Defense Bloc fell from 8.8% in January to 4.4% in September. He said the rating of the Regions Party was the highest in September, at 22.5%. The rating of the Communist Party of Ukraine grew to 4.7%. Of those polled, 3.9% said they would vote for the Bloc of Lytvyn.
Adobe opens representative office in Kyiv

The office will not perform trade operations so far, executing only “representative functions”, said Danylo Kliuschenko, the future head of the Adobe representative office in Ukraine. Adobe Systems is one of the leading software producers, in particular, software for graphic design.
Russian-Georgian conflict may split Ukraine, says expert

Kyiv, August 27 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The Georgian-Russian conflict may split Ukraine, a research officer from the Institute for Russian Studies, Iskander Khisamov, has said. "It is a very dangerous collision, especially for Ukraine. This Caucasian conflict only strengthens unity in both Russia and Georgia against a common enemy, but in Ukraine this issue may split the country," he said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine news agency on Wednesday on the results of the second wave of national surveys in Ukraine and Russia, entitled "Ukrainians and Russians: views on each other." According to Khisamov, the Russian authorities have come up with a slogan for the international community that reads: "Those who are not with us are against us." This is a basis for certain confrontational blocs in the future.
Jordanian airlines Royal Jordanian will launch Kyiv-Amman flight on August 17

Kyiv, August 12 (Interfax-Ukraine) - Royal Jordanan of Jordan is to start regular flights from Kyiv to Amman on August 17, Aviareps, the general agent of Royal Jordanian in Ukraine, has told Interfax-Ukraine. The flights will be made twice a week, on Sunday and Wednesday, using an Embraer 195 aircraft. Royal Jordanian was founded in 1963. The company flies to the Middle and Far East, North Africa, Europe, North America, and Asia. It has a fleet of 27 aircraft. Aviareps Group was founded in Germany in 1994. It has representative offices in more than 30 countries. It represents the interests of over 70 airlines and 75 tourist agencies around the globe.
Tymoshenko enjoys highest rating as presidential candidate, according to opinion poll

Kyiv, July 31 (Interfax-Ukraine) - If the presidential elections had been held on July 27, current Premier Yulia Tymoshenko would have led with 23.7% of the vote, according to the results of the public opinion poll announced by FOM Public Opinion Foundation Director Oleksandr Bukhalov at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Thursday. Tymoshenko would be followed by Regions Party Leader Viktor Yanukovych with 20.5%, Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko with 7.3%, Communist Party Petro Symonenko with 4.8% and Volodymyr Lytvyn - 3.4%. A total of 30% of respondents would vote against all. If a second-round runoff were held, the Tymoshenko would get 34% and Yanukovych 31%. A total of 2,000 respondents participated in the interview, which was conducted July 12 through July 25, 2008
Conflict between Ukrainian President and government to weaken country, say experts

Kyiv, July 18 (Interfax-Ukraine) - The conflict between the Ukrainian president and the government weakens Ukraine, Director of Institute for Economic Research and Political Consultations Ihor Burakovsky said at a press conference at the Interfax-Ukraine agency on Friday. "At present, the issue of regulating the activity of the main political players in authority is extremely important, because the conflict between the president and the government leads to a lessening of the effectiveness of Ukraine ... and impedes the taking of strategic decisions," he said. According to Burakovsky, one of the distinctive trends seen in the latest political events is that all political players are now in conflict with each other on all issues concerning the political and social-economic development of the country.
Leadership of communications sector hindering conversion of frequency bands for 3G, says parliamentary committee head

Kyiv, July 17 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The leadership of the communications sector is hindering the conversion of frequency bands in the 2.1 GHz range for 3G mobile communications, the head of the parliamentary committee for transport and communications, Volodymyr Kozak, said at a press conference at Interfax-Ukraine on Wednesday. "Today, around UAH 1 billion of investment has been lost due to this," he said. Kozak said that the Transport and Communications Ministry has stopped financing the Phone in Each House program with the attraction of CDMA operators, which was approved by the previous government. "The stoppage of the financing of the program means that over 1,800 settlements have no phones in apartments," he said. Earlier, Transport and Communications Minister Yosyp Vinsky also said that the program is not fulfilled, pointing out the imperfection of the latter and the necessity to select new relations in the sphere with mobile operators.
Association of Realtors jointly with Union of Realtors to hold All Ukrainian real estate congress in fall

Kyiv, July 10 (Interfax-Ukraine) – The Association of Realtors of Ukraine jointly with the Union of Realtors of Ukraine on October 13 to October 15 are to hold the "Realtor-Professional" all-Ukrainian real estate congress, the president of the Association of Realtors of Ukraine, Oleksandr Bondarenko, said at Interfax-Ukraine in Kyiv on Thursday. He said that the event is aimed at consolidating the efforts of realtors, representatives of state authorities, local government bodies, and the business mass media to create and improve a civilized real estate market in Ukraine. The annual congress of the Association of Realtors of Ukraine would be held during the congress, at which its members are to elect a new president of the organization, he said. During the press conference, the Association of Realtors and Union of Realtors confirmed earlier announced plans to join at the congress and create a common all-Ukrainian organization.
