Integration of gas transit system into European energy space a strategic goal for Ukraine, says president

Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has said that the full-scale integration of Ukraine's gas transit system into European energy systems is a strategic goal for the country, his press secretary Iryna Vannykova has said.

She said at a briefing on Monday that the head of state would participate in an international investment conference on the modernization of Ukraine's gas transit system in Brussels.

"The head of state views this conference as a fruitful element of three-year diplomatic work to achieve the goal of integrating Ukraine with the European energy space," Vannykova said.

She said that Yuschenko considers this goal to be strategic and hopes that the conference would become the first stage of the "practical implementation of elaborated ideas and proposals."
