The Czech Republic, as a European Union member, cannot unilaterally decide to grant free visas to Ukrainians, Czech President Vaclav Klaus has said.
"The Czech Republic in this respect is part of the European Union and the republic cannot pursue any visa policy autonomously," he said at a joint press conference with his Ukrainian counterpart Viktor Yuschenko in Prague on Tuesday.
Klaus stressed that the Czech people respect Ukrainians who come to the Czech Republic to work and vacation.
"The visa policy cannot restrict that issue," he said.
