The Ukrainian Interior Ministry registered UAH 43 million worth of bribes taken this year, a member of the ministry's anti-corruption bureau, Taras Martynenko, said at a press conference in Kyiv on Thursday.
He said that the ministry had registered 366 cases of bribery worth over UAH 10,000 and 238 cases of bribes worth over UAH 30,000. The overall amount of bribes registered by the police this year totaled UAH 43 million, he said.
"It is a bit higher than in the same period last year," Martynenko said.
Head of the Ukrainian State Customs Service Tymofiy Motrenko, in turn, said that over 6,000 protocols on corrupt schemes, including over 3,000 in respect to state employees, were sent to the courts in 2008. He said that the courts had opened criminal cases against four state employees.
Motrenko said that 28 criminal cases were opened against customs officers in the first quarter of 2009.
