Ukraine should take part in the fight against international piracy, Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has said.
"We should focus on the issue of protecting Ukraine's interests in new zones of risk, I mean first of all the fight against piracy. Ukraine shares the world's growing determination to eradicate this problem," Yuschenko said at events to mark the Day of Ukraine's Armed Forces.
According to the president, Ukraine should apply military and technical means of its own to find a way to protect the interests of its citizens, its state and its society.
As reported, the Ukrainian ship Faina, flying the flag of Belize, was seized en route to Kenya on September 25. The ship was carrying about 30 T-72 tanks and parts, as well as 21 crewmembers, among them 17 Ukrainians, three Russians and one Latvian. The Somali pirates have demanded a ransom for the release of the ship and its crew.
