Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko has asked Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn and the parliament not to politicize the issue of the performance of Ukrainian National Bank Governor Volodymyr Stelmakh and Finance Minister Viktor Pynzenyk, while speaking at a meeting with the parliament speaker in Kyiv on Thursday.
"I'm anxious about the situation, that now there are too much politics going on around the Finance Ministry and the National Bank," Yuschenko said.
He said "an attack on the finance minister and NBU governor would lead to a descent into deep crisis."
Yuschenko asked Lytvyn to quell the "fiery statements", which have been made recently.
According to the president, all of MPs and the country should understand that the NBU doesn't set the hryvnia's currency exchange rate... According to the law it [the NBU] doesn't have the right to oppose the currency's [weakening] tendency," Yuschenko said.
