The head of Verkhovna Rada temporary commission investigating sales of Ukrainian weapons to Georgia, Valeriy Konovaliuk (the Regions Party), repeated claims that Ukrainian military specialists participated in the Russian-Georgian conflict in August 2008 on the Georgia's side while speaking in an interview to the 2000 weekly published on Friday.
He said he wants the Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office to investigate the matter.
"This is an undoubted fact and the commission can prove this. Ten specialists from a Ukrainian state company were involved in a contract servicing the Buk-M1 and Osa air defense systems. They returned to Ukraine by plane on August 13. Three specialists from another state company carried out testing and commissioning operations and trained T-72 tank crews. They returned [to Ukraine] on August 14. Four air defense specialists visited Georgia as well," Konovaliuk said.
"We know the surname's of these people and their passport data," he said.
According to Konovaliuk, after the report of the Verkhovna Rada commission these materials will be submitted to the Prosecutor General's Office, "which, I hope, can find out what they were doing in Georgia."
