The elections to the agencies of local government, including Kyiv city council and the Kyiv mayor's office, must be held in Ukraine simultaneously on May 30, 2010, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Volodymyr Lytvyn has said.
"I again addressed the relevant committees, charging the agency [of the Verkhovna Rada] with giving a final explanation of a decision by the Constitutional Court. Thus, as I read and understand this decision, then it [the decision on holding elections to local councils] came into effect from the moment of its adoption... This means that when the elections start, it is required to gather 51 votes in Kyiv city council, create an election commission and adopt a decision on the election of the city council and city head," he told journalists on Monday after a sitting of parliament's conciliatory council.
The speaker noted that the Verkhovna Rada received legislative regulations that foresee the adoption of laws on two rounds of the election of city mayors and amendments to the current law on the capital of Ukraine, Kyiv.
