The Sixth Kyiv Book Fair-Exhibition has opened at the International Exhibition Center in Kyiv.
Verkhovna Rada Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn, Minister of the Cabinet of Ministers Anatoliy Tolstoukhov and Chairman of the State Television and Radio Broadcasting Committee Yuriy Plaksiuk attended the opening ceremony of the fair.
"This exhibition is a particular reflection of our state of mind and our intellectual level," Lytvyn said at the opening of the fair.
Tolstoukhov assured the participants of the event that the government intends to create conditions for the proper future development of publishing in Ukraine.
In turn, Plaksiuk said that the Cabinet of Ministers helped to finance and organize the exhibition. He also read an address from Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych to the participants of the event.
Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Press and Mass Communications Vladimir Grigoriev, who headed the Russian delegation, said Russia publishes about 120,000-130,000 titles every year. He also noted that only a small part of them were presented at the book fair.
The exhibition will last until August 21. As reported, Russia has become the featured country guest at the event. Polish, Belarusian, Hungarian, Cuban, Chinese, Korean, Bulgarian and Israeli publishers also presented their books at the fair.
Meetings with modern Russian writers, presentation of new books and roundtables will be also held as part of the fair.
