Kyiv Metropolitan municipal enterprise is calling for a rise in the fare for a single trip in Kyiv subway from UAH 1.70 to UAH 2, acting head of the municipal enterprise Volodymyr Fedorenko has said.
"The subway is currently incurring losses. We are not replacing worn equipment: we are repairing, patching what should already be replaced. We see that the fares in shuttle buses are higher than those in the subway. But shuttle buses require no tunnels, escalators and many other things that are in the subway. We need much money to repair escalators, for instance," Fedorenko said during a conference in the Arguments and Facts newspaper's office on Friday.
In addition, UAH 1.70 is inconvenient as a single fare as the booking offices need a lot of small coins to make change.
"We pay UAH 100,000 to UAH 100,500 monthly to the banks for exchanging money alone. It would make sense to set the one trip fare at UAH 2, and not to change the price of a travel card," he said.
