Ukraine opposes Taiwan's independence, according to joint statement by Yanukovych, Hu Jintao

Ukraine supports the One China Policy and opposes Taiwan's independence, according to statement signed by Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and Chinese Leader Hu Jintao in Beijing on Thursday.

This was stated in the second clause of the joint statement on advancing the Ukrainian-Chinese relations to a new level signed by the two leaders

"Ukraine has reaffirmed that it supports and will continue to support the One China policy, and is against Taiwan's independence in any form. It opposes Taiwan's entry into international organizations, which are open only to sovereign states, and will have no official contacts with Taiwan," the document reads.

At the same time, Ukraine is an advocate of the peaceful reunification of China, and sees the Taiwan issue as an internal affair of China.

China, in turn, said it respects Ukraine's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

China appreciated Ukraine's decision to renounce nuclear weapons, and reiterated its position not to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear states and nuclear-free zones, which include Ukraine.

The joint statement contains 14 clauses of mutual obligations, including the confirmation of the need to maintain stable macroeconomic policies, strengthen macroeconomic and financial policies, further promote the reform of the international financial system, and the readiness to help political parties of both countries and NGOs to expand mutual contacts, as well as a number of other provisions.
