Yanukovych proposes simultaneous parliamentary, presidential elections

Regions Party leader Viktor Yanukovych believes that early parliamentary and presidential elections should be held simultaneously in Ukraine as soon as possible.

"We propose changing the whole present-day government system through amending the electoral legislation and the Constitution, after which simultaneous presidential and parliamentary elections should be held, the sooner the better," the Regions Party's press service quoted Yanukovych as saying on Friday.

Asked about a possible coalition between the Block of Yulia Tymoshenko and the Regions Party, Yanukovych said that partners in negotiations should not place their personal interests above national interests.

"We are disappointed that the ruling coalition's factions see the need to resolve the economic crisis in Ukraine as a secondary matter," he said.

The Regions Party is ready to unite with any other party only on the basis of an anti-crisis program, Yanukovych said.
